Race Update: Race Cancelled

Due to the imminent Northeaster scheduled for Saturday night into Sunday morning predicted to dump 6-12 inches of heavy snow and up to 40 mph wind gusts, the 2013 Half at the Hamptons is cancelled. There will not be a makeup date. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.

Race cancellation decision process: The final authority on whether the race can be held is determined by our Assembly permit which is issued by the Town of Hampton and the Hampton Police. With the promise of inclement weather it has been determined that the roads are unsafe for our event and our permit has been cancelled. Therefore we are unable to conduct the race.

AAAAAAAAGHHHH. . . . . !

Yes, that's exactly how we feel. Like the race has been yanked out from under our feet. Just like you, we look forward to our races and seeing all those smiling happy, healthy faces. To us, putting on races is what makes us tick, what makes us feel good about ourselves, how we give back to the running community. We love what we do and we would very very much rather put on the race, then cancell it.. but Mother nature has other plans.

What happens now? You have two options. You can come to Hampton and join us Saturday for some fun festivities at the Ashworth. Or, you can stay home and get your long run in and get ready to enjoy the storm safe and sound.

SATURDAY Festivities:

Ashworth by the Sea - Noon - 4 PM

1) Winter Adventure Party: We will be opening up the Ballroom in the Ashworth on Saturday from noon to 4 pm. Here you can enjoy Hot Clam Chowder, Veggie soup, Hot Cocoa, Lindt Chocolate, Stonyfield Yogurt and of course cold Smuttynose Beer. Everyone is welcome.

2) FREE Showers are available at Ashworth: If you choose to go for a run come on back and get warm. (Ask at the front desk)

NOTE: BRING YOUR OWN TOWEL

3) Worlds Shortest Half Marathon: A 13.1 Meter course with finish and start banners will be setup inside the Ashworth - At the end you can get your "finishers" medal.

5) Race T-shirts: Registered runners - Get your nice long sleeve cotton T-shirt inside the ballroom. We have men's and womens sizes and they are very nice.

6) Door Prizes and music provided. Come one, come all!

Individual or group Run: Yes, we know that many of you will come to Hampton and go for a run on Saturday. Please be careful on the roads, you are responsible for your own safety and running at your own risk. No support staff will be out there to direct traffic.

Sunday Stay Home!

RACE CANCELLATION FAQ

Why can't you just hold the race? I run in snow all the time! We love running in the snow too. However it's one thing for a few people to be out there running in the snow, and another for 1,300 hundred people, and 200 volunteers and 15 police to be out in the snow risking their lives. Please consider these safety reasons:

A) Based on current forecasts, it will be very dangerous Sunday morning driving to the race for runners AND volunteers and to get back home again.

B) Our volunteer groups for water stops and corner marshals consist of young adults who drive to the assignments. We do not want dozens of young drivers driving or out there in a storm. Nor do we want them standing out in the road where they can be hit by a car or a plow.

C) Police and Race Marshals would be putting their lives at risk by standing in slippery road with limited visibility. We feel this risk is too much to ask them to bear.

D) We could not guarranty your safety with the predicted hazardous road conditions including 40 mph gusts and possible white-outs. Road plows will be out there trying to clear the roads with runners in the road. A dangerous proposition any way you look at it.

Can I get a refund?

No. According to our policy clearly printed on the registration page web site, no refunds are available for any reason. At this point, the great majority of the race expenses are already spent or committed to. Everything from custom shirts, bibs, medals and signs to the catered food, beer, advertising, venue costs, insurance, permit fees and water is paid for, even if no race is held... Only a few race-day items such as police and timing can be eliminated. Any extra savings of race expenses will be added to our donation to the local food pantrys and local groups.
